| Epithelial lesions extending through the muscularis mucosae into the submucosa, are defined as ulcers. The left picture shows an ulcer with a deep key- shaped mucosal lesion surrounded by a smooth mound and localized at the angular fold. The ulcer base is clearly beneath the mucosal surface. Magnification (right picture) of the ulcer base reveals fibrin coverage, a whitish, yellowish and greenish colour representing hematin and fibrin in the upper sections. | |
